7 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari – Akagera Wildlife, Nyungwe Chimps & Lake Kivu

Overview

This 7-day Rwanda safari offers an unforgettable journey through the country’s most spectacular landscapes, combining wildlife safaris, rainforest adventures, and cultural encounters. The tour begins with exciting game drives in Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah park and home to the famous Big Five including lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, and leopards.

From the eastern plains, the adventure continues north to the volcanic region of Volcanoes National Park, where travelers experience the highlight of the journey — gorilla trekking in Rwanda. Hiking through bamboo forests on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains, visitors spend an unforgettable hour observing endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

The safari then leads to the tranquil shores of Lake Kivu, where scenic islands, hot springs, and lakeside views provide the perfect setting for relaxation.

Your journey continues into the ancient rainforest of Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and a biodiversity hotspot. Here you will enjoy an exhilarating canopy walk high above the forest floor and track chimpanzees deep within the jungle.

This Rwanda safari combines gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, Big Five wildlife safaris, cultural experiences, and breathtaking landscapes, making it one of the most rewarding wildlife adventures in East Africa.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is possible all year round. However, the best months are June to September and December to February, when trails are generally drier and trekking conditions are easier.

The rainy seasons (March–May and October–November) bring lush scenery and fewer tourists, which can also make for a rewarding safari experience.
