Top Safari Destinations in Kenya

Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s most famous wildlife destination and home to the world-renowned Great Wildebeest Migration — one of nature’s most spectacular events. Watch millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the Mara River as predators wait in thrilling pursuit. Year-round, the reserve offers incredible game viewing, with lions, elephants, leopards, and cheetahs roaming the plains.

Amboseli National Park

Located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is famous for its giant elephant herds and stunning mountain backdrop. Capture postcard-perfect photos of elephants marching across the dusty plains beneath Africa’s highest peak.

Lake Nakuru National Park

A birdwatcher’s paradise, Lake Nakuru is known for its flocks of pink flamingos and diverse wildlife, including rhinos, lions, and giraffes. The park’s scenic beauty and conservation success make it one of Kenya’s most rewarding safari stops.

Samburu National Reserve

In northern Kenya, Samburu offers a unique, semi-arid landscape and rare wildlife species like the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, and gerenuk. The local Samburu people welcome visitors to experience their culture and traditions.

Tsavo East & Tsavo West National Parks

Together, these parks form one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Known for their red elephants, dramatic scenery, and rugged wilderness, Tsavo East and West offer a truly authentic safari experience off the beaten track.

Mount Kenya National Park

Adventure seekers can trek Africa’s second-highest mountain, Mount Kenya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park features lush forests, alpine meadows, and glaciers — a paradise for hikers and photographers.

Kenya’s Indian Ocean Coast

After your safari, unwind on Kenya’s tropical coastline. Relax on the soft white sands of Diani Beach, explore the historic streets of Lamu Island, or dive in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The coast offers the perfect balance of culture, history, and relaxation.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania

Tanzania is a year-round destination, but your experience depends on what you want to see:

  • June to October (Dry Season): Best for classic safaris — clear skies, minimal rain, and excellent wildlife visibility. Ideal for the Great Migration and Kilimanjaro climbs.

  • November to May (Green Season): Lush landscapes, newborn animals, and vibrant birdlife. Great for photographers and travelers seeking fewer crowds and lower rates.

  • Safaris are available all year round.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Most travelers require a visa to enter Kenya.

  • eVisa: Kenya has introduced a fully digital Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system. Apply online before departure via the official Kenya eTA website.

  • Passport Requirements: Your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond your travel date, with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa-Exempt Travelers: Citizens of East African Community (EAC) countries can enter freely with valid national IDs or passports.

Tip: Apply for your eTA at least one week before travel to avoid delays.

Currency & Money Matters

  • Local Currency: Kenyan Shilling (KES).

  • Accepted Currencies: US Dollars (issued after 2009) are widely accepted in lodges and tourist areas.

  • Credit Cards: Accepted at most hotels and major stores; Visa and Mastercard are most common.

  • ATMs: Found in major towns and airports.

  • Mobile Payments: M-Pesa is widely used in Kenya — a fast and secure mobile money service.

Tip: Carry some cash for tips, souvenirs, and smaller purchases where cards may not be accepted.
